in spite of / despite / although

Her üç kelime de zıtlık ifade etmekle beraber, birlikte kullanıldıkları yapılar farklıdır.

in spite of: -e rağmen, -e karşın

despite:  edat -e karşın, -e rağmen

although:  bağlaç -diği halde, ise de, olmakla beraber.

In spite of / despite:

in spite of ve despite sonra, isim veya zamir gelir.

• "We enjoyed our picnic in spite of the rain."
• "Despite the pain in his arm he completed the workout"
• "Despite having all the necessary qualifications, they didn’t offer me the job."

(Bir fiilin gerund (-ing eki almış) halinin "isim" olduğunu hatırlayalım.)

in spite of ve despite arasındaki tek fark "of" kelimesidir. Despite sonra "of" kullanılmaz.

Although:

Altough sonra, özne ve bir fiil gelir.

• "We enjoyed our picnic although it rained every day."
• "Although he worked very hard, he didn’t manage to pass the exam."
• "The holiday was great although the hotel wasn’t very nice."

in spite of ve despite özne ve bir fiil ile birlikte kullanılmak istenirse, "the fact that" ifadesine yer verilmesi gerekir.

• "In spite of the fact that he worked very hard, he didn’t manage to pass the exam."
• "Despite the fact that he worked very hard, he didn’t manage to pass the exam."

Even though

Even though, although göre daha kuvvetli bir anlam verir. Although benzer şekilde, even though sonra da bir özne ve fiil gelir.

"We decided to buy the house even though we didn’t really have enough money."
"You keep making that stupid noise even though I’ve asked you to stop three times."
